Mosaic Crochet "Flutter By" Hat Pattern

 The "Flutter By" Hat Pattern
I really love the effect of the mosaic crochet technique.
If you've never tried it really is a simple technique.
The rounds are made up of sc's that are worked into the back loop of the st you are working on, which leaves the front loop of that st available to work a dc into. The dc will be worked into the front loop of the row below you are working on, the dc you are making and the row below is the same color, so it's easy to know where you are working into.

The hat is made from the bottom up.
You will make a length of chain and join it to form a ring.
You will then make your st's into each chain of the ring and slip st to join every round.
After making the band (4 rounds), the pattern has 19 rounds and the decreases for the crown have 6 rounds.
This pattern will use 3 colors. the main color is the beginning color (color 1 = c1) and is also the back ground color of the pattern, the second color (color 2 = c2) is used in all even numbered rows and makes the out line of the pattern, the third color (color 3 = c3) is for coloring in our pattern, the written pattern will include where to use the 3rd color.
Written in US terms.
Suggested Materials needed:
10 ply/Aran/Worsted

4mm
Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet (all dc's will be worked into the front loop of 2 rows below)
dec = decrease
inc = increase
fpdc = work a dc in front and around the post of the dc
bpdc = work a dc from the back and around the post of the dc
Special Stitches:
dc in the front loop of 2 rows below (when you do this, you will skip over the st that now sits behind the dc you just made, we don't want to make extra st's)
To Begin: making the ribbed look band and using the main colored yarn.
For sizes small to medium adult chain 64 st's and slip st join into a circle.
This is the perfect time to place the chain around your head and test for sizing, you can add or subtract the chains for a smaller or larger fit, my written instructions will be based on 64 st's, but you can add or subtract on each end of the written instructions.
This pattern has lots of flexibility to do that with (equally) at the start and end of the rounds.
The chain 2 at the start of the band rounds does not count as a st, you will slip st to join the rounds in the first st of the round and not the ch 2.
Round 1. ch 2, work 1 dc in each ch st, sl st into the first dc to join the round. (64 st's)
Round 2. ch 2, (fpdc, bpdc) x 32, sl st into the first fpdc to join the round. (64 st's)
Round 3. ch 2, (fpdc, bpdc) x 32, sl st into the first fpdc to join the round. (64 st's)
I'm finishing my band here as I want the pattern low, you have the choice to make another round to make the band a bit longer.
Round 4. ch 1, work 1 sc into the back loop of each st of the round, sl st to join round. (64 st's)

Pattern Begins:
Using the same yarn, (color 1 = c1).
Remember all sc's are now worked into the back loop!
Round 1. using c1, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 2nd color
Round 2. using c2, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 1st color (c1) to begin with, have color 3 (c3) ready for the coloring in of the pattern, I found it best to break off the yarn c3 and re join it during the pattern color changes.
Round 3. using c1, ch 1, dc x 9, using c3 sc x 3, using c1 dc x 11, using c3 sc x 4, using c1 dc x 4, sc, dc x 4, using c3 sc x 4, using c1 dc x 11, using c3 sc x 3, using c1 dc x 10,  sl st to join round
From round 4 and all other even numbered rows, you can crochet over the tails of the color 3 (c3) when making sc's.
Round 4. using c2, ch 1, sc x 9, dc, sc, dc, sc x 11, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 4, dc, sc x 4, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 11, dc, sc, dc, sc x 10, sl st to join round
In round 5, I was able to crochet over c1 when using c3, but still breaking off yarn c3 between a longer st count.
Round 5. using c1, ch 1, dc x 7, c3 sc x 5, c1 dc x 3, sc, dc x 6, c3 sc x 2, dc x 2, sc x 3, c1, dc x 2, sc, dc x 2, c3 sc x 3, dc x 2, sc x 2, c1 dc x 6, sc, dc x 3, c3 sc x 5, c1 dc x 8, sl st to join round
Round 6. using c2, ch 1, sc 7, (dc, sc) x 2, dc, sc x 10, dc, sc x 5, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 5, dc, sc x 10, (dc, sc) x 2, dc, sc x 8, sl st to join round

The hat is made from the bottom and up wards.
The size is a medium adults hat. You can make it larger by using a larger hook size.
Written in US terms.
Suggested Materials needed:

4mm
Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop
hdc = half double crochet

Making the band
To Begin:
Make the band/brim
Ch 9
Row 1. work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
Row 2. work 1 sc into the back loop of each sc, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
continue working row 2 until you have 57 rows, once the band is joined with a row of sl st's, you will have 58 rows.
 Join band into a circle.
Leave yarn attached, ch 1 and sl st to join using the back loops of the last row made and the unworked loops of the beginning chain row.

TIP: Do not join too tight as it may pucker.
I used the grey to establish the beginning round and used it again for round 1 of the pattern sequence.
 I have made a video tutorial
for the head band
here it is
After making the band and completing 1 round of sc (58 st's), begin the pattern
All even rows are made in the pattern color (pastel black), all odd rows are made in the background color (mine is grey).
 This is the pattern graph for the hat

After making the band and completing 1 round of sc, continue to pattern
Pattern Begins "remember all sc's are made in the back loop"
You may notice this (2 dots) .. in the pattern, it's just the break after each animal.
Round 1. ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round, (58 st's)
now using 2nd color
Round 2. ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round,

We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's bringing our count to 60 st's in total.
We will also work the rest of the rounds in hdc's and into the back loop of the stitches.
Round 20. ch 1, hdc x 18, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 19, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 19, sl st to join round (60 st's)

The "I Fish Bones" Beanie

I Fish Bones
A Mosaic Crochet Beanie pattern

The hat is made from the bottom and up wards.
The size is a medium adults hat. You can make it larger by using a larger hook size.
Written in US terms.
Suggested Materials needed:
10 ply/Aran/Worsted

4mm
Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet (all dc's will be worked into the front loop of 2 rows below)
dec = decrease
inc = increase
Special Stitches:
dc in the front loop of 2 rows below (when you do this, you will skip over the st that now sits behind the dc you just made, we don't want to make extra st's)
I used the peacock to establish the beginning round and used it again for round 1 of the pattern sequence.
 I have made a video tutorial
for the head band
here it is

After making the band and completing 1 round of sc, begin the pattern
All even rows are made in the pattern color (mine is pumpkin), all odd rows are made in the background color (mine is peacock).
Below is the graph for the hat pattern.
Round 1. ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 2nd color
Round 2. ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 1st color
Round 3. ch 1, dc x 16, sc x 6, dc x 2, sc x 3, dc x 18, sc x 3, dc x 10,
sl st to join round

sl st to join round.
The mosaic pattern is now finished,
continue on with the same yarn (back ground color)
Round 16. ch 1, bl (back loop) hdc x 58, sl st to join round
Round 17. ch 1, bl (back loop) hdc x 58, sl st to join round
We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's, bringing our count to 60 st's in total.
We will also work the rest of the rounds in bl (back loop) hdc's.
Round 18. ch 1, hdc x 9, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 38, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 9, sl st to join round (60 st's)
Decreases for crown begins
Round 19. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 4 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (50 st's)
Round 20. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 3 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (40 st's)
Round 21. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 2 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (30 st's)
Round 22. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in the next 1 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (20 st's)
Round 23. Ch 1, *bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join and sew closed the remaining st's.
Congratulations, you have finished your hat.

The "Beat It" Beanie

The "Beat It" Beanie
A Mosaic Crochet Hat Pattern.

The hat is made from the bottom and up wards.
The size is a medium adults hat. You can make it larger by using a larger hook size.
Written in US terms.

I used the grey to establish the beginning round and used it again for round 1 of the pattern sequence.

Round 17. ch 1, dc x 30, sc x 3, d1c x 25, sl st to join round. you have now finished the pattern sequence and we can continue on with the grey to make the crown with the decreases.
We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's bringing our count to 60 st's in total.
We will also work the rest of the rounds in hdc's and into the back loop of the st's we work into.
Round 18. ch 1, hdc x 9, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 38, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 9, sl st to join round (60 st's)
Decreases for crown begin
Round 19. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 4 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (50 st's)

Congratulations, you have finished your hat.

I wonder what tune it is playing
