Mosaic Crochet 101: Overlay, Inset, and Mirrored Explained

Mosaic Crochet 101: Overlay, Inset, and Mirrored Explained

If you’ve been looking at my Free Mosaic Pattern Graphs page and wondering, "How on earth do I actually crochet this?" you are in the right place.

Mosaic crochet is fantastic because it creates stunning colorwork that looks complicated, but it’s actually much easier than it looks. The golden rule is simple: You only ever work with one color at a time. No juggling multiple balls of yarn!

However, "Mosaic Crochet" isn't just one technique. There are three main ways to do it, and you need to know which one you are using before you start.

  • 1. Overlay Mosaic (The "One-Row" method)
  • 2. Inset Mosaic (The "Two-Row" method)
  • 3. Mirrored / Anchored Mosaic (The "Reversible" method)

Here is the plain English guide to the differences.

1. Overlay Mosaic (The "Cut-Your-Yarn" Method)

This is currently the most popular method you’ll see in modern patterns (like those by Rosina Plane or Tinna). It creates very crisp, pixel-perfect images.

How it works:

  • One Direction Only: You always work on the Right Side (front) of the fabric. You never turn your work.
  • Cut the Cord: Because you don't turn, you have to cut your yarn at the end of every single row. This creates a fringe on both sides.
  • The Main Stitch: Most stitches are Single Crochet worked in the Back Loop Only (BLO).
  • The Magic Stitch: When the pattern calls for a color drop, you work a Double Crochet into the Front Loop of the stitch two rows below. This covers up the row in between.

The Result: The front is sharp and clear. The back creates a striped texture with little horizontal ridges.

2. Inset Mosaic (The "Two-Row" Method)

This is the classic method. If you hate weaving in ends or dealing with fringe, this is the one for you.

How it works:

  • Back and Forth: You work two rows in Color A, then switch and work two rows in Color B. You turn your work at the end of every row, just like normal crochet.
  • No Cutting: You carry the unused color up the side of your work.
  • Chains create gaps: Instead of working into the back loop, you work through both loops. When you need to skip a space for the pattern, you make Chain stitches.
  • Filling the Gaps: On the next color change, you work a long stitch into the space created by those chains to "fill in" the pattern.

The Result: The fabric is slightly stretchier and softer than Overlay. The lines aren't quite as sharp, but you have almost no ends to weave in!

3. Mirrored / Anchored Mosaic (The "Reversible" Method)

This is a variation of the Overlay method. It solves the main complaint people have about Overlay: "The back looks messy."

How it works:

It follows the same rules as Overlay (cutting yarn every row), but with one extra trick.

  • In standard Overlay, the "drop down" stitches leave a loose loop behind them on the back of the work.
  • In Mirrored Mosaic, you "anchor" your drop stitch by catching that loose loop from the previous row as you work.
  • It takes a little longer, but the finish is beautiful.

disclaimer, the above image is ai generated!

The Result: By anchoring the stitches, you remove the ridges on the back. The back looks like a "negative" of the front image (truly reversible).

Quick Comparison: Which one should I choose?

Feature Overlay Mosaic Inset Mosaic Mirrored (Anchored)
Ends/Tails Lots! (Fringe on sides) Very few (Carried up side) Lots! (Fringe on sides)
Turn Work? No. Always Right Side. Yes. Turn every row. No. Always Right Side.
Main Tech Back Loop Only + Drops Chains + Filling gaps Anchoring the Drops
The Back Striped with ridges. Striped and smooth. Mirrored Image (Negative).

A Note on Reading My Charts

Most of the graphs I post here on Cats Rockin Crochet can technically be used for all three methods, but you have to read them differently!

  • If doing Overlay/Mirrored: An 'X' on the chart usually means you do a Drop Down Double Crochet. An empty square is a Back Loop Single Crochet.
  • If doing Inset: An empty square usually means you Chain (skip the stitch).

Top Tip: Always check the key on the pattern! If it says "cut yarn at end of row," you are doing Overlay. If it says "turn work," you are doing Inset.

If you want to see these stitches in action, here are the best tutorials for each method:

1. Overlay Mosaic (The "Cut Yarn" Method)

Watch Tinna Thorvaldsdóttir explain the basics of Overlay Mosaic. Notice how she cuts the yarn at the end of every row!

2. Inset Mosaic (The "No-Ends" Method)

Watch Bella Coco demonstrate Inset Mosaic. Pay attention to how she carries the yarn up the side (no cutting!).

3. Mirrored / Anchored Mosaic (The "Reversible" Method)

Mosaic Crochet "Flutter By" Hat Pattern

 The "Flutter By" Hat Pattern
I really love the effect of the mosaic crochet technique.
If you've never tried it really is a simple technique.
The rounds are made up of sc's that are worked into the back loop of the st you are working on, which leaves the front loop of that st available to work a dc into. The dc will be worked into the front loop of the row below you are working on, the dc you are making and the row below is the same color, so it's easy to know where you are working into.

The hat is made from the bottom up.
You will make a length of chain and join it to form a ring.
You will then make your st's into each chain of the ring and slip st to join every round.
After making the band (4 rounds), the pattern has 19 rounds and the decreases for the crown have 6 rounds.
This pattern will use 3 colors. the main color is the beginning color (color 1 = c1) and is also the back ground color of the pattern, the second color (color 2 = c2) is used in all even numbered rows and makes the out line of the pattern, the third color (color 3 = c3) is for coloring in our pattern, the written pattern will include where to use the 3rd color.
Written in US terms.
Suggested Materials needed:
10 ply/Aran/Worsted

4mm
Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet (all dc's will be worked into the front loop of 2 rows below)
dec = decrease
inc = increase
fpdc = work a dc in front and around the post of the dc
bpdc = work a dc from the back and around the post of the dc
Special Stitches:
dc in the front loop of 2 rows below (when you do this, you will skip over the st that now sits behind the dc you just made, we don't want to make extra st's)
To Begin: making the ribbed look band and using the main colored yarn.
For sizes small to medium adult chain 64 st's and slip st join into a circle.
This is the perfect time to place the chain around your head and test for sizing, you can add or subtract the chains for a smaller or larger fit, my written instructions will be based on 64 st's, but you can add or subtract on each end of the written instructions.
This pattern has lots of flexibility to do that with (equally) at the start and end of the rounds.
The chain 2 at the start of the band rounds does not count as a st, you will slip st to join the rounds in the first st of the round and not the ch 2.
Round 1. ch 2, work 1 dc in each ch st, sl st into the first dc to join the round. (64 st's)
Round 2. ch 2, (fpdc, bpdc) x 32, sl st into the first fpdc to join the round. (64 st's)
Round 3. ch 2, (fpdc, bpdc) x 32, sl st into the first fpdc to join the round. (64 st's)
I'm finishing my band here as I want the pattern low, you have the choice to make another round to make the band a bit longer.
Round 4. ch 1, work 1 sc into the back loop of each st of the round, sl st to join round. (64 st's)

Pattern Begins:
Using the same yarn, (color 1 = c1).
Remember all sc's are now worked into the back loop!
Round 1. using c1, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 2nd color
Round 2. using c2, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st of the round, sl st to join round
now using 1st color (c1) to begin with, have color 3 (c3) ready for the coloring in of the pattern, I found it best to break off the yarn c3 and re join it during the pattern color changes.
Round 3. using c1, ch 1, dc x 9, using c3 sc x 3, using c1 dc x 11, using c3 sc x 4, using c1 dc x 4, sc, dc x 4, using c3 sc x 4, using c1 dc x 11, using c3 sc x 3, using c1 dc x 10,  sl st to join round
From round 4 and all other even numbered rows, you can crochet over the tails of the color 3 (c3) when making sc's.
Round 4. using c2, ch 1, sc x 9, dc, sc, dc, sc x 11, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 4, dc, sc x 4, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 11, dc, sc, dc, sc x 10, sl st to join round
In round 5, I was able to crochet over c1 when using c3, but still breaking off yarn c3 between a longer st count.
Round 5. using c1, ch 1, dc x 7, c3 sc x 5, c1 dc x 3, sc, dc x 6, c3 sc x 2, dc x 2, sc x 3, c1, dc x 2, sc, dc x 2, c3 sc x 3, dc x 2, sc x 2, c1 dc x 6, sc, dc x 3, c3 sc x 5, c1 dc x 8, sl st to join round
Round 6. using c2, ch 1, sc 7, (dc, sc) x 2, dc, sc x 10, dc, sc x 5, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 2, dc, sc x 5, dc, sc x 10, (dc, sc) x 2, dc, sc x 8, sl st to join round

The "Head Of Hearts" Hat Pattern

The "Head Of Hearts" Hat Pattern

Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop

Making the band
To Begin:
Make the band/brim
Ch 9
Row 1. work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
Row 2. work 1 sc into the back loop of each sc, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
continue working row 2 until you have 57 rows, once the band is joined with a row of sl st's, you will have 58 rows.
 Join band into a circle.
Leave yarn attached, ch 1 and sl st to join using the back loops of the last row made and the unworked loops of the beginning chain row.

TIP: Do not join too tight as it may pucker.
I used the grey to establish the beginning round and used it again for round 1 of the pattern sequence.
I have made a video tutorial
for the head band
here it is

After making the band and completing 1 round of sc (58 st's), begin the pattern
All even rows are made in the pattern color (pastel variegated), all odd rows are made in the background color (mine is grey).
This is the pattern graph for the hat

We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's bringing our count to 60 st's in total. We will also work the rest of the rounds in hdc's and into the back loop of the stitches.
Round 18. ch 1, hdc x 3, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 34, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 19, sl st to join round (60 st's)

Round 23. Ch 1, *bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join and sew closed the remaining st's.

Congratulations, you have finished your hat.

Round 17. ch 1, dc x 30, sc x 3, d1c x 25, sl st to join round. you have now finished the pattern sequence and we can continue on with the grey to make the crown with the decreases.
We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's bringing our count to 60 st's in total.
We will also work the rest of the rounds in hdc's and into the back loop of the st's we work into.
Round 18. ch 1, hdc x 9, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 38, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 9, sl st to join round (60 st's)
Decreases for crown begin
Round 19. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 4 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (50 st's)
Round 20. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 3 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (40 st's)
Round 21. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 2 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (30 st's)
Round 22. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in the next 1 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (20 st's)
Round 23. Ch 1, *bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join and sew closed the remaining st's.
Congratulations, you have finished your hat.

I wonder what tune it is playing

Mosaic Lantern Trellis

I designed this mosaic crochet graph a little while back and have been itching to make it up. I wrote the pattern as I was making it off the graph and am very pleased to share it with you.
Pattern 1 reminds me a little of lanterns and the in between pattern reminds me of trellis, so that's how I got the name.
I think it's a pretty design and it is easy to follow, it is so nice to have the symmetry between both patterns as you can make it as big or as small as you like.
In the picture below I have given you some measurements, but these are specific to me when we speak of tension, I'm a medium tension gal'.
But it gives you an all round estimate of the sizing and you can plan away to make your own Mosaic Lantern Trellis.

Pattern includes written and graph instructions.
Experience needed: single row (cut n tie) mosaic crochet technique.
Materials:
10 ply. worsted weight and a 4 mm (g) hook. (Or materials of your choice)
The written instructions are in US terms.
SS = side stitch, the beginning ss is a regular sc and the end ss is a sc worked in between the legs of the previous sc, this avoids slanting.
Unless stated other wise, all sc's are worked into the back loop

Unless stated other wise, all  dc's are worked into the front loop of the st that is 2 rows below the row that you are now making.

In the pattern, I have written repeat 10 times, but that is just an example of repeats, in my sample I only repeated the pattern sequence 7 times.

Don't forget that you can copy and paste the pattern to your word document

The number of chains is for a repeat of 10. ie: 10x16=160 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 162
The 16 is the number of st's per 1 pattern sequence.
To repeat pattern 6 times it would be 6x16=96 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 98
To repeat pattern 8 times it would be 8x16=128 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 130
To repeat pattern 12 times it would be 12x16=192 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 194
All odd numbered rows are the back ground color.
All even numbered rows are the pattern color.

To Begin, using back ground color.
Chain 162 + 1 ch for turning, work 2 rows of regular sc, ch 1 and turn, we are now going to work the single row (cut and tie) mosaic pattern.

Aqua Mix Link
White Link
These yarns are often on sale, are 100% acrylic and come in 200 gms for the plain colors and the variegated comes in 140 gms.
The yarn is soft to the touch, it washes up really well, can get furry over time if used for a pet blanket.

Mosaic Crochet Flower Vase

The Mosaic Crochet Flower Vase is the perfect shape for a standard pillow.
The pattern can also be changed for a more square look too.
It's 80 st's wide and if the graph was altered to 80 st's high, it would form a large square.
It measures 26 inches wide and 18 inches high, but it will stretch out further if needed.
Mine was made with worsted weight acrylic yarn and crocheted with a 4mm hook (US G 6).

Pattern includes written and graph instructions.
Experience needed: single row (cut n tie) mosaic crochet technique.
Materials needed for one is approx 250 grams of yarn in the color of your choice.
10 ply. worsted weight and a 4 mm (g) hook.
