The Play Ground Hat

The Play Ground Hat

The play ground hat is loads of fun to make, it's full of texture that is made with st's you are already familiar with.
Don't be afraid of making this hat, it's easier than it looks!

The hat begins at the bottom, which is made in a strip, then joined to form a circle.
The size we are making here is a medium size, but you can adjust the size of your hat, I have detailed instructions over here in another free crochet hat pattern.

Suggested experience: beginner +

Materials needed:
10 ply/worsted weight/Aran
5mm/H-8 hook

Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
bl = back loop, the back loop used in this pattern, is the 3rd loop of the hdc
fp = front post
dec = decrease

dc = double crochet
Special stitches used:
yif sc = yarn in front sc, I'm also going to refer to this method as the zipper single crochet.
zsc = zipper single crochet =
zipper stitch, bring your working yarn to the front of your work, hold it down with your thumb, then make a sc as normal, the stitch you just made looks like a knit st when held side ways
The bead st is a repeat of 3
Bead stitch = make a dc, turn your dc side ways, work a 3 wrap cluster around the double crochet =  yarn over hook, insert hook under the dc, pull up a loop, leaving all loops on hook, repeat 2 more times, 7 loops on hook, yarn over hook pull through 6 of those loops, you now have 2 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook. 1 bead stitch made.
The hdc weave is a repeat of 2
hdc Weave stitch = *work 1 hdc into the front 2 loops of the next hdc, work the 2nd hdc into the third loop only of the next hdc* repeat these 2 st's to make the hdc weave stitch

This video will show you how to do the hdc weave stitch

To Begin:
Make the band/brim in the main color
Ch 9
Row 1. work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
Row 2. work 1 sc into the back loop of each sc, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
continue working row 2 until you have 48 rows.
Leave yarn attached, ch 1 and sl st to join using the back loops of the last row made and the un worked loops of the beginning chain row.

Do not join too tight as it may pucker.
PLEASE NOTE ALL ROUNDS ARE JOINED WITH A SL ST
Main color
R 1. work ch 3 and 50 dc's into first row = 17 lot's
of 3 (51 st's)
Second color
R 2. ch 2, fpdc around the ch 3 from previous row, bead st in next, skip 1 st, *fpdc around next dc, bead st in next, skip 1 st* repeat from *to* to end (17 bead st's made)
*PLEASE NOTE THE BEGINNING CH'S OF ALL THE FOLLOWING ROWS ARE NOT COUNTED AS A STITCH*
The top of the bead stitch will have 2 spaces use them both as a stitch for the next row, the picture shows, a fpdc and the 2 loops on top of the bead st
Main color
R 3. ch 1, work 1 hdc in each st to end (51 st's)
Second color
R 4. ch 1, work the sc zipper st in each st to end (51 st's)
Main color

R 5. ch 1, work 1 dc in each st to end (51 st's)
Second color
R 6. ch 2, fpdc around the beginning dc  from previous row, bead st in next, skip 1 st, *fpdc around next dc, bead st in next, skip 1 st*
repeat from *to* to end (17 bead st's made)
Main color
R 7. repeat row 3.

*rounds 8 to 11, work all hdc's into the the 3rd loop of the hdc's of the previous round*
We need an even number of st's now, so we will decrease one at the start of the next row

R 8.  ch 1, hdc 2 tog, work 1 hdc into the 3rd loop of each hdc
to end (50 st's)
9, 10 and 11. ch 1, work 1 hdc into the 3rd loop of each hdc to
end

You are now up to here as pictured
12 to 14. ch 1, work the hdc weave st (50 st's)

If your OCD you may not like the decreasing.
The following rows will be the decreasing for the top shape of your hat or hair bun hat, because we are decreasing over an odd and even number of st's the pattern sequence will get out of order, it's easiest to make the hdc weave as a mirror image of the previous row, by doing a hdc in the front 2 loops into a hdc that was made into the front 2 loops and make the hdc in the 3rd loop into a hdc that was made into the 3rd loop. The pattern will still look AMAZING! See photo, you cannot tell there is a difference.

Decreases
R 15. ch 1, *hdc weave over next 8 st's, hdc dec next 2 st's
together*
repeat from *to* to end (45 st's)
R 16. ch 1, *hdc weave over next 3 st's, hdc dec next 2 st's
together*
repeat from *to* to end (36 st's)
R 17. ch 1, *hdc weave over next 2 st's, hdc dec next 2 st's
together*
repeat from *to* to end (27 st's)
for beanie instructions, go to make a beanie at
round 18.
Messy hair bun
R 18. ch 1, work 1 sc in each st to end
R 19. ch 1, work 1 sc into the back loop only of each sc to
end, finish off.

to make a beanie
R 18. ch 1 *hdc weave in next st, hdc dec next 2 st's
together*
repeat from *to* to end  (18 st's)
R 19. ch 1 *hdc next 2 st's together*
repeat from *to* to end break off yarn and weave through remaining st's to close the hole.
