The "Beat It" Beanie

The "Beat It" Beanie
A Mosaic Crochet Hat Pattern.
I really love the effect of the mosaic crochet technique.
If you've never tried it really is a simple technique.
The rounds are made up of sc's that are worked into the back loop of the st you are working on, which leaves the front loop of that st available to work a dc into. The dc will be worked into the front loop of the row below you are working on, the dc you are making and the row below is the same color, so it's easy to know where you are working into.

The hat is made from the bottom and up wards.
The size is a medium adults hat. You can make it larger by using a larger hook size.
Written in US terms.
Suggested Materials needed:
10 ply/Aran/Worsted

4mm
Stitches used:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
bl = back loop
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet (all dc's will be worked into the front loop of 2 rows below)
dec = decrease
inc = increase
Special Stitches:
dc in the front loop of 2 rows below (when you do this, you will skip over the st that now sits behind the dc you just made, we don't want to make extra st's)
Making the band
To Begin:
Make the band/brim
Ch 9
Row 1. work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
Row 2. work 1 sc into the back loop of each sc, ch 1 and turn (8sc)
continue working row 2 until you have 57 rows, once the band is joined with a row of sl st's, you will have 58 rows.
 Join band into a circle.
Leave yarn attached, ch 1 and sl st to join using the back loops of the last row made and the unworked loops of the beginning chain row.

TIP: Do not join too tight as it may pucker.
I used the grey to establish the beginning round and used it again for round 1 of the pattern sequence.
I have made a video tutorial
for the head band
here it is

After making the band and completing 1 round of sc, begin the pattern
All even rows are made in the pattern color (mine is black), all odd rows are made in the background color (mine is grey).
This is the pattern graph for the hat

Round 16. ch 1, sc x 30, dc x 3, sc x 25, sl st to join round, break off Pattern color and leave a tail to sew in.
Round 17. ch 1, dc x 30, sc x 3, d1c x 25, sl st to join round. you have now finished the pattern sequence and we can continue on with the grey to make the crown with the decreases.
We need to make the math work for our decreasing of the crown of the hat, so we are going to increase in this round for an extra 2 st's bringing our count to 60 st's in total.
We will also work the rest of the rounds in hdc's and into the back loop of the st's we work into.
Round 18. ch 1, hdc x 9, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 38, work 2 hdc's in next st, hdc x 9, sl st to join round (60 st's)
Decreases for crown begin
Round 19. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 4 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (50 st's)
Round 20. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 3 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (40 st's)
Round 21. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in each of the next 2 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (30 st's)
Round 22. Ch 1, *work 1 bl hdc in the next 1 st's, bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join (20 st's)
Round 23. Ch 1, *bl hdc the next 2 st's together* repeat from *to* to end of the round, sl st to join and sew closed the remaining st's.
Congratulations, you have finished your hat.

I wonder what tune it is playing

Mosaic Crochet Beginner Friendly Pattern And Chart

The break down of a mosaic crochet graph pattern.

Here you will see 3 different patterns that have an equal number of repeats.
I specifically designed this pattern for a beginner to use, but it is also an easy pattern for those who are more advanced.

When I design a mosaic graph I place red lines around the pattern repeat. This means that what is in the red lines is repeated over and over for the width of your pattern.

My measurements may be different to yours as we all have different tension and it will also differ in measurements depending on the yarn ply. I was using 10 ply/Aran/Medium Worsted and used a 4mm hook.
But the calculations will work with all types of yarn, hook and tension.

Using this pattern as an example, it has a 9 stitch repeat.
Lets say we want to make a scarf and the 9 st's measure approx 3 inches wide and we want our scarf to be about 15 inches wide.
We just need to figure out how many 3's go into 15 and that is 5.
So we are going to repeat our 9 st pattern 5 times, which is 45 st's.
There will also always be a beginning st and ending st in every pattern, commonly referred to as a ss (side stitch).
So we will start our scarf with 47 chains and 1 more for a turning chain on our very first row.

This is pattern 1
If I wanted to make a throw and the standard measurement for one of those is 52 inches wide, I need to find out how many 3 inches are in 52 inches wide.
Google tells me it is 17.3333333.
Now I know I have to repeat the 9 st's 17 times and that = 153 st's.
So that is the width, but what about the height?
The throw is approx 60 inches in height, I can measure as I make it and stop at around that height of my choice, or follow the more in depth instructions below.
This is pattern 2
Now with this graph above, we know it is 3 inches wide, but it is higher than the first part of the pattern.
To get an estimate of the height we can measure the first pattern st's that we made.
You will need to measure the dc's and when I measured only 1 of my dc's it came in just under 1 inch, now that will not be an accurate way to measure, so I measured the rows until I got a more accurate measurement and that just happened to be 5 rows high coming in at 3 inches high.
So now we know that 5 rows high is 3 inches high.
To get to my 60 inches in height, I need to find out how many 3 inches are in 60 inches and that = 20 times.
So if I do 20 times 5 rows I am looking at 100 rows high, which measures our 60 inches in height.
 This is pattern 3
The graph above is the third pattern, I will now show you the pattern in it's large form below.
It looks high enough, but not wide enough in the graph, but now you know that you just have to repeat the pattern inside the red lines 17 times to make it wide enough for your throw.
Now I will show you the entire graph with the markings for the mosaic crochet technique and the red lines for the repeat.
Once you have mastered reading a graph for mosaic crochet, you can get away with using only this graph below.
I will now give you the written instructions for the pattern.
Don't forget you can copy and paste to a word document and click on the graph pictures and save them.

Mosaic Lantern Trellis

I designed this mosaic crochet graph a little while back and have been itching to make it up. I wrote the pattern as I was making it off the graph and am very pleased to share it with you.
Pattern 1 reminds me a little of lanterns and the in between pattern reminds me of trellis, so that's how I got the name.
I think it's a pretty design and it is easy to follow, it is so nice to have the symmetry between both patterns as you can make it as big or as small as you like.
In the picture below I have given you some measurements, but these are specific to me when we speak of tension, I'm a medium tension gal'.
But it gives you an all round estimate of the sizing and you can plan away to make your own Mosaic Lantern Trellis.

Pattern includes written and graph instructions.
Experience needed: single row (cut n tie) mosaic crochet technique.
Materials:
10 ply. worsted weight and a 4 mm (g) hook. (Or materials of your choice)
The written instructions are in US terms.
SS = side stitch, the beginning ss is a regular sc and the end ss is a sc worked in between the legs of the previous sc, this avoids slanting.
Unless stated other wise, all sc's are worked into the back loop

Unless stated other wise, all  dc's are worked into the front loop of the st that is 2 rows below the row that you are now making.

In the pattern, I have written repeat 10 times, but that is just an example of repeats, in my sample I only repeated the pattern sequence 7 times.

Don't forget that you can copy and paste the pattern to your word document

The number of chains is for a repeat of 10. ie: 10x16=160 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 162
The 16 is the number of st's per 1 pattern sequence.
To repeat pattern 6 times it would be 6x16=96 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 98
To repeat pattern 8 times it would be 8x16=128 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 130
To repeat pattern 12 times it would be 12x16=192 + 1 ss + 1 ss = 194
All odd numbered rows are the back ground color.
All even numbered rows are the pattern color.

To Begin, using back ground color.
Chain 162 + 1 ch for turning, work 2 rows of regular sc, ch 1 and turn, we are now going to work the single row (cut and tie) mosaic pattern.

Aqua Mix Link
White Link
These yarns are often on sale, are 100% acrylic and come in 200 gms for the plain colors and the variegated comes in 140 gms.
The yarn is soft to the touch, it washes up really well, can get furry over time if used for a pet blanket.

Mosaic Crochet Flower Vase

The Mosaic Crochet Flower Vase is the perfect shape for a standard pillow.
The pattern can also be changed for a more square look too.
It's 80 st's wide and if the graph was altered to 80 st's high, it would form a large square.
It measures 26 inches wide and 18 inches high, but it will stretch out further if needed.
Mine was made with worsted weight acrylic yarn and crocheted with a 4mm hook (US G 6).

Pattern includes written and graph instructions.
Experience needed: single row (cut n tie) mosaic crochet technique.
Materials needed for one is approx 250 grams of yarn in the color of your choice.
10 ply. worsted weight and a 4 mm (g) hook.

Don't forget that you can copy and paste the pattern to your word document

To Begin:
Chain 80 + 1 ch for turning, work 2 rows of regular sc, ch 1 and turn, we are now working the single row (cut and tie) mosaic pattern.
